Super League: Wigan Warriors stunned by Castleford Tigers to miss out on chance to move joint-top

Betfred Super League strugglers Castleford pulled off a shock 24-14 win over Wigan with a superb second-half display at the Brick Community Stadium.

The Tigers had been thrashed 34-0 by Wakefield in their last league game to sit bottom of the table, but soon silenced the home support with an early try from Krystian Mapapalangi after a swift break down the left, and Tom Weaver slotted over the conversion.

Wigan, aiming to go level on points with the leaders, looked set for a try in the 16th minute when Jai Field barged through, but was bundled into touch behind the line before he could ground the ball by a brilliant defensive tackle from Mikaele Ravalawa.

An athletic flying dive from Dayon Sambou in the corner got Wigan on the board in the 24th minute after the ball had been worked right across the line, with Adam Keighran slotting over the extras from a tight angle.

The Warriors, who had been edged out by Wakefield in their Challenge Cup quarter-final, then put themselves in front when a high kick from Jack Farrimond was knocked down by Sambou for Zach Eckersley to go over and a penalty from Keighran made it 14-6 shortly before half-time.

Castleford regrouped for the restart as Jack Ashworth powered over down the left in the 45th minute, before an improvised kick through from Mapapalangi saw him barge past Field to touchdown another try and put the visitors back in front.

The Tigers maintained their momentum as George Lawler went through three Wigan defenders to touchdown a fourth try just before the hour, as Weaver's conversion extended the lead to 10 points.

A video review ruled out another try from Weaver for obstruction in the build up before Wigan made a successful captain's challenge against a late penalty being awarded for tackling without the ball. The clock, though, continued to tick down as Castleford closed out a deserved victory.
